40 S&W is a rimless pistol cartridge that is a joint development between Smith & Wesson and Winchester. Developed in 1990 as a law enforcement cartridge designed to duplicate the performance of the FBIs Reduced Velocity 10mm Auto. The 40 S&W Cartridge debuted on January 17, 1990, along with the new Smith & Wesson 4006 Pistol, although it was several months before the pistols were available for purchase.
