7.62×39, also known as 7.62 Soviet or .30 Russian Short is a rimless bottlenecked cartridge of Soviet origin. The cartridge is widely used due to the worldwide proliferation of Russian SKS and Kalashnikov pattern rifles, as well as the RPD and RPK light machine guns. This cartridge remained standard in the Soviet Union until the 1970s when it was replaced by the 5.45×39 cartridge.
